Booking Deadline:

Monday 22nd May, 2023

Location:

Freethorpe Village Hall, Freethorpe, Norwich NR13 3LZ (View on map)

The charity beneficiaries were chosen by members in 2019, before COVID obstructed our fundraising efforts and the walk will be in memory of the late Leigh Reeder, a long standing club official, and a great friend to many of the club’s members.

Details of the event, which was announced at the club AGM in September 2022, are as follows:

  • Date - Saturday 1st July 2023

  • Start/finish – Freethorpe Village Hall, Freethorpe, Norfolk, NR13 3LZ

  • The Walk - A marathon distance 26.2 mile walk in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. Participants will complete two loops of a walk that takes in some beautiful scenery and nature. There will be an option to complete one loop only for those wishing to cover a half-marathon distance.

Timetable for the day

The club officials are still working on the finer details in conjunction with the two branches of Mind, but below is an approximate guide to the day.

07:30 - Arrive for registration

08:00 - Begin the walk

Marathon walkers will be requested to finish both loops within 12 hours to ensure completion by 20:00. Committee members recently completed one loop of the course as a trial run in just under 5 hours, walking at a leisurely pace.

12:30 - Registration for those wishing to complete one loop only.

Approx 13:00-13:30 - Second loop of the walk commences.

18:00 - 20:00 - Walkers complete their walks. Food will be served for all walkers, and there will be an opportunity for celebratory drinks!

Please note that although snacks and hydration will be available at certain points along the way, it will be the responsibility of individual walkers to ensure that they bring adequate food and water to sustain them for the duration of the walk.

Please also be aware that parts of the walk involve crossing fields where cattle are grazing.

Registration

Early registration is highly encouraged as this will greatly assist us with planning the logistics. While we are in the initial planning stages we are restricting registration to members and family members only.

For those wishing to participate, there is a registration fee of £12 for each participant, with an early bird price of £10 available to members up until 12th February 2023. The registration fee is the same whether you intend to walk one or two loops.

All walkers will receive a specially produced t-shirt to wear on the day marking the event, food at the conclusion of the walk, as well as some snacks and hydration during the walk.

You can complete your registration by purchasing the appropriate ticket below. Members will need to be signed into the members area before completing your purchase.

The closing date for registrations is 21st May 2023.

Volunteers Required

We will require the assistance of a small number of volunteers on the day: for example assisting with checking in walkers, distributing snacks and water, marshalling etc.

If there is anyone unable to do the walk, but willing and able to volunteer their time to assist on the day, please get in touch with one of the club officials.

Please do let us know if you have a special link to the chosen charities.
